Like.fm is how social music should work




After I expressed my disappointment with Ping yesterday, a helpful reader pointed me to Like.fm as an example of the promise

of social music.

 
Link Like.fm to your Facebook page, and it will build a tab with songs you've recently played on iTunes, YouTube, and

Pandora.

(Credit: Screenshot) Here's how it works. First, download and install the free plug-in for iTunes. (There's also a WinAmp

version for you holdouts.) Whenever you play a song from iTunes, Like.fm posts the title and artist on a public Web page.

Other users can then click on the "play"
ffxiv powerlevelingbutton on that page and if a video of the song exists on YouTube, it'll start playing. If you link Like.fm to your

Facebook profile, you can create a new "Music" tab on your profile that lists all the songs you've played. Here, your friends

can click on any song title on that profile page and their browser will open to the Like.fm page, where the YouTube video

will begin playing in a small window.

There's also a separate plug-in for the Chrome
ffxiv powerlevelingand Safari browsers. Install it, and any time you play a song on YouTube or Pandora (other sites are

coming soon), it will post that song to your Like.fm profile.

The service isn't perfect--it didn't recognize several songs when I played them on YouTube, and currently the only way to

find friends on the service is if you both link your
ffxiv powerleveling accounts to Facebook. But conceptually, this is how social music is supposed to work: you can actually

listen to music your friends are playing, rather than being guided to 30-second samples in an effort to get you to buy the

download.

Some who are at a loose end will find it odd to wake up to a Labor Day weekend and discover that the Adult Section on

Craigslist has been removed and that the link to it on the site's home page has been replaced with a black bar reading

"censored."

Craigslist has long been the whipping boy for attorneys general seeking to control prostitution within their purview and

perhaps also seeking to win the favor of certain members of their constituencies.

However, why the section should suddenly have been removed in such a dramatic way (the censorship is only active in the U.S.)

is unclear.

The section was originally entitled Erotic Services. Its name was changed to reflect a new discipline, as, under pressure

from attorneys general, Craigslist

leveling declared it would manually screen every ad in its newly named Adult Services section.

It is arguable whether the content of this new section truly changed. Some would say it was adult business as usual.

Recently, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark gave a troubling if spontaneous interview to CNN, in which he seemed unable to

answer questions about whether the site was facilitating child prostitution. Then, instead of answering the specific charges,

Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster took to the company's blog to assail the CNN reporter's methods.

Perhaps it was Newmark's interview that led to 17 attorneys general getting together last week to demand the removal of the

Adult Services section.

In a joint letter to Craigslist, the attorneys
ffxiv powerleveling general said, "No amount of money...can justify the scourge of illegal prostitution and the suffering of

the women and children who will continue to be victimized in the market and trafficking provided by Craigslist."

It is surely, though, splendidly naive to think Craigslist would somehow be alone in providing a forum for prostitution ads.

Whether they be local free newspapers or other sites, like eBay, there are plenty of outlets for services that some deem

should be legalized.

However, Craigslist is in the

World's best sounding 3D Blu-ray



I've referred to the AIX Records "Audio Calibration Disc & HD Music Sampler" Blu-ray in a

bunch of my CNET equipment reviews because it's loaded with terrific sounding Dolby TrueHD

and DTS Master Audio music tracks. AIX refrains from using dynamic range compression,

equalization or signal processing, so the sound is as close to being at the original

session as can be.

Now, with the release of "Goldberg Variations Acoustica" AIX has ventured into producing

original 3D video
ffxiv power levelingprogramming. The new

Blu-ray was shot with four prototype Panasonic 3D A1

cameras, and the sound was recorded in 96 kHz/24-bit high-resolution audio.

(Credit: AIX Records) "Goldberg" maintains AIX's high standards for sound quality, but I'm

an audio guy, so I called upon two of my video reviewer CNET colleagues, David Katzmaier

and Matthew Moskovciak, to comment on the disc's 3D picture quality. They watched the Blu-

ray on a Panasonic TC-P65VT25 display and were generally impressed. They liked the

picture's depth, but expressed concerns about visible crosstalk, which can appear as

doubled outlines around onscreen objects like the stand up bass' strings. Katzmaier and

Moskovciak also felt the image wasn't as sharp as it could have been. The crosstalk

artifacts varied from shot to shot, but Moskovciak still felt the "Goldberg" Blu-ray might

be the best live action 3D picture he's seen *in a home theater setting* (the 3D image

quality of "Avatar" in a movie theater was better).

Regarding the crosstalk, Katzmaier felt it wasn't the disc's fault, and the crosstalk might

not show up on future generations of 3D TVs. "Goldberg" is fully compatible with standard

2D Blu-ray players and displays, so you can enjoy the disc even if you don't own a 3D set.

Sonically, "Goldberg" is a

musically, it's a jazz interpretation of Bach's

famous composition. Like most AIX titles the disc offers two surround mixes, "Audience,"

meaning the sound is from the audience's perspective, and "Stage," which puts you on stage

among the musicians. It's nice to have the choice, though I much prefer the "Audience"

perspective. In either case, Laurence Juber's acoustic guitar, Kevin Axt's bass, M.B.

Gordy's drums, and Alberto Lopez' percussion all sound natural and three-dimensionally

present. Once you get used to hearing AIX discs most standard commercially released

recordings sound hopelessly flat and artificially processed. "Goldberg" is the best

sounding Blu-ray I own.

of AIX discs and see how good your system is right now.

I almost forgot to mention it, but the AIX Records "Audio Calibration Disc & HD Music

Test" and "System Setup Tutorial" to help fine-tune your sound.

talking about a senior post with Oracle, according to The Wall Street Journal

In Silicon Valley Hurd had been regarded as one of its most successful executives. He was widely credited with steering HP

BERLIN--Samsung's Galaxy Tab got a lot of the attention Thursday, but Toshiba had an Android tablet of its own to debut here

at the IFA electronics show: the Folio 100.

Unlike the smaller Tab, the

resemblance to Apple's iPad, the dominant tablet device on the

market today. And where Samsung will sell the Tab only through phone companies as a kind of smartphone on steroids, Toshiba's

Folio will like the iPad come in 3G and non-3G models when it goes on sale in Europe in the fourth quarter.

The Folio will cost 399 euros (about $511) for the version with just Wi-Fi networking; the 3G version price jumps to 499

euros (about $639). It's got a 10.1-inch multitouch screen with 1024x600-pixel resolution, an Nvidia Tegra processor, stereo

speakers, a 1.3-megapixel Webcam, two USB ports, an SD card slot, an HDMI connector for sending video to other screens,

Bluetooth communications, and 16GB of memory.

    It weighs 760 grams--about the same as an iPad with 3G abilities. The Folio's battery lasts seven hours when being used

65 percent for Web browsing, watching video for 10 percent, and idling for 25 percent, Toshiba said.

Besides the array of Android applications available, the Folio 100 also comes with the Opera Mobile Web browser, the FBReader

e-book reader software, Documents To Go for productivity suite, Evernote for taking notes, Adobe's Flash Player 10.1 for

running Flash apps, and Fring for video chat. Most of these are useful, so let's hope this doesn't portend the migration to

Android of the crapware

(and subsidizes) many Windows PCs.

I found the Folio 100 to be comfortable to hold and easy enough to use for basic tasks. Its performance didn't jump out at

me, and pushing buttons seemed to come with a lag I'm used to on phones, but applications loaded reasonably fast. I found the

interface easy to dive into--but then, I'm already familiar with Android quirks, such as how to make the virtual keyboard pop

up when you need it and go away when you're done.

The Folio 100 also taps into the Toshiba Place service. Toshiba Place provides a number of elements. First, it lets people

log on to a single site that can then post content elsewhere, including Facebook and DailyMotion. Second, it's got the Market

Place to buy music, videos, e-books, games, news, and other content that's available on all Toshiba Places-equipped devices.

That includes Folios, Toshiba laptops, and some TVs. The music service is powered by 7Digital, Toshiba said.

Like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the Folio uses Android 2.2, aka Froyo. One thing different from mobile phones, though, is the

inclusion of a home button in the upper-left of the screen to take a user to the full list of applications. As with phones,

swiping left or right shows new applications.

Many of the apps will be familiar to Android users but occupying a lot more screen real estate. This can be awkward at times:

a logon dialog box that would be a small window on a laptop or full-screen on a smartphone swallows the entire view on the

Folio.

Here's one difference, though.
